Marine Debris on New Zealand Beaches - Baseline Data to Evaluate Regional Variances
نویسندگان
چکیده
Terrestrial sources of marine debris on beaches are substantial, increasing, and primarily a result mismanaged waste land. The scale, source, composition beached in New Zealand was determined by surveying 41 beaches, with triplicate belt transects, across the North South Islands. Results demonstrated significant spatial variance, Island showing significantly higher mean density than more populated count as well weight. majority all anthropogenic detected plastic arrived through water. Explanations for regional variances presence difficult to ascertain certainty but could not be explained population proximity. These findings contribute understudied field research Southern Hemisphere provide starting point evidence-based mitigation. Recommended changes future monitoring programs made. This first national baseline study serves reference follow-up studies, including at other locations.

Linking social drivers of marine debris with actual marine debris on beaches.
The drivers (social) and pressures (physical) of marine debris have typically been examined separately. We redress this by using social and beach surveys at nine Tasmanian beaches, across three coastlines and within three categories of urbanisation, to examine whether people acknowledge that their actions contribute to the issue of marine debris, and whether these social drivers are reflected i...
متن کاملMarine debris surveys on four beaches in Rizhao City of China
Compared with USA, UK, Brazil, Indonesia, Australia, etc., marine debris research in China has received less attention and few studies have attempted to quantify the abundance and mass of marine debris. In this paper, the abundance, composition and source of beached marine debris, and debris collection system and frequency as well as dustbins’ conditionwere investigated in Duodaohai, Wanpingkou...
متن کاملMarine Debris on Selected Malaysian Beaches: Impacts of Human Ignorance
Solid wastes are commonly found on Malaysian beaches as any other parts of the world. Generally known as beach debris, this particular type of waste is treated similar to other municipal waste in Malaysia where 95% of it will be disposed off into landfills. Studies were conducted on four beaches in Peninsular Malaysia namely Teluk Kemang, Pasir Panjang, Batu Burok, and Seberang Takir. The objec...
متن کاملSemi-automatic recognition of marine debris on beaches
An increasing amount of anthropogenic marine debris is pervading the earth's environmental systems, resulting in an enormous threat to living organisms. Additionally, the large amount of marine debris around the world has been investigated mostly through tedious manual methods. Therefore, we propose the use of a new technique, light detection and ranging (LIDAR), for the semi-automatic recognit...
متن کاملQualitative Analysis of Plastic Debris on Beaches of Brunei Darussalam
Plastic debris is one of the major environmental concerns for the coastal area of Brunei Darussalam. It reduces the aesthetic appeals of the beaches in the country. The current study investigates marine debris on six different beaches of Brunei Darussalam along the South China Sea. Plastic was found the most abundant among whole debris by number (90.02%) and by weight (39.12%). It was classifie...
